The Iron King by Julie Kagawa is everything a fairy tale isn’t. Stakes are high, and lives are on the line in a dark and twisted fairyland, where everything comes at a price. Kagawa’s fast pace and close attention to detail make this story one of suspense and surprise.
Kagawa writes a lot of high fantasy stories, and in this first instalment of the Iron Fey series, it’s clear to see why. The Iron King crosses between our world and another, much darker realm. Kagawa writes with rich detail, which brings her story’s setting to vivid life. Fairyland is a landscape of customs and creatures and contracts that are dangerous to navigate and oh-so cleverly constructed.
The Iron King’s main character, sixteen-year-old Meghan Chase, is loyal, driven, and single-minded—all important qualities in a heroine on a quest. Meghan learns the truth about her past, the dangers of fairyland, and just how far she’ll go to protect the people (and fey) she loves. Her journey is transformative and engaging, and it isn’t without its fair share of your favourite romance tropes (did someone say enemies to lovers?).
The Iron King focuses on themes of love and loyalty, exploring each of these things through a number of subplots. Can Meghan protect those she loves, or will protecting one cost the life of another? I’d recommend The Iron King to fans of Julie Kagawa’s Shadow of the Fox series and Maria V. Snyder’s The Eyes of Tamburah.
The Iron King is far from being Julie Kagawa’s only book! Julie is also the author of the Shadow of the Fox series, the Talon saga, the Blood of Eden series, and the Call of the Forgotten series. You can stay up to date with Julie on her website, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
The Iron King was recently released as a special edition (and it includes an excerpt from the newest Iron Fey book, The Iron Raven!). You can pick up your copy of The Iron King from Booktopia, Book Depository, Dymocks, or QBD, or you could support a local bookstore. You can also check it out on Goodreads.
A big, big thank you to the magical team at Harper Collins Australia for sending me this review copy of The Iron King!

Meghan Chase has a secret destiny; one she could never have imagined.
Something has always felt slightly off in Meghan’s life, ever since her father disappeared before her eyes when she was six. She has never quite fit in at school or at home.
When a dark stranger begins watching her from afar, and her prankster best friend becomes strangely protective of her, Meghan senses that everything she’s known is about to change.
But she could never have guessed the truth – that she is the daughter of a mythical faery king and is a pawn in a deadly war. Now Meghan will learn just how far she’ll go to save someone she cares about, to stop a mysterious evil, no faery creature dare face; and to find love with a young prince who might rather see her dead than let her touch his icy heart.
