The Anti-Prom

The Anti-Prom by Abby McDonald | Book Review

The Anti-Prom

The Anti-Prom by Abby McDonald is all things high school drama! Combining all your favourite YA contemporary tropes—unlikely friendships, prom night failures, and pranks and escapades—this book is the perfect light read.

How complicated can the high school social hierarchy be? The events of The Anti-Prom take place in just one night, following three unlikely allies through a series of elaborate revenge plots. McDonald perfectly encapsulates the common trials and tribulations of the high school experience, like popularity and lack thereof, cheating scandals, friendship fallouts, reputation crises, and family disasters. In a single prom night, McDonald offers a comprehensive glimpse into the high school ecosystem—and the food chain.

The Anti-Prom

Popular girl Bliss, bad girl Jolene, and goody two-shoes Meg are anything but friends. They just don’t run in the same circles. But revenge and rebellion are powerful motivators, and these three unlikely accomplices are off quite the adventure. McDonald’s characters fulfil the high school archetypes we’re all familiar with, which makes them easy to relate to.

The Anti-Prom has a clear coming-of-age theme, but it also tackles self-esteem, loss, and absent parents. This is a story about adolescence and the many, many lessons and challenges that come with it. I’d recommend The Anti-Prom to fans of Meet Me at Midnight by Jessica Pennington and Taking Down Evelyn Tait by Poppy Nwosu.

Abby McDonald is British author Abigail Haas’s pen name. Abigail is also the author of Summer of Love; L.A. Lovestory; Dangerous Girls; Dangerous Boys; Sophomore Switch; Boys, Bears, and a Serious Pair of Hiking Boots; Getting Over Garrett Delaney; Jane Austen Goes to Hollywood; The Popularity Rules; The Liberation of Alice Love; and Life Swap. That’s a whole lot of books!
